A Psalm for Today: Psalm 51:17

A Psalm for Today: Psalms 51: 17
The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit, a broken and contrite heart---- these, O God, You will not despise.

Psalm 51 is a psalm of contrition written after Nathan had exposed David's sin. God is a merciful God. His mercies are new every morning and they endure forever. The sacrifice of bulls and goats are not what God is looking for. Jesus was the eternal sacrifice slain once for all sin. "And every priest stands ministering daily and offering repeatedly the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins. But this Man, after He had offered one sacrifice for sins forever, sat down at the right hand of God...." Hebrews 10:11,12 Jesus sprinkled His own blood upon the mercy seat not made with hands. We cannot come to God in arrogance, there is nothing we have to bring. He resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble.(James 4:6) He gives grace to those who recognize their need. We are saved by grace through faith; we cannot earn nor do we deserve it. Those who come to God in contrition and brokeness will not be turned away. A bruised reed, He will not break and a smoldering wick, He will not extinguish. When we come to God with a broken and contrite heart, He receives us and not only does He receive us, He heals us. Weeping may endure for the night, but joy comes in the morning.
