A Psalm for Today: Psalms 57:1
Be merciful to me, O God, be merciful to me! For my soul trusts in You; and in the shadow of Your wings I will make my refuge, until calamities have passed by.
This psalm was a song of David when he fled from Saul into the cave. Abdullam's cave became a refuge for David. While there, many people who were discontented, distressed, and in debt gathered unto David. Many of those who joined with David in the cave would later be known as David's mighty men. Difficulty is often preparation for future authority and so often we find David and his men in difficult places. He was in training for reigning. Patience or endurance has a perfecting work. David's cries for mercy were answered, of course, for God delivered him and he became a great king. Taking refuge in the shadow of God's wings reminds me of what Jesus said as He lamented over Jerusalem saying that often he had wanted to gather her children as a hen gathers its chicks under her wings. He is our refuge and He desires to protect us. God can speak peace to our storm or He can give us peace in the midst of it, but either way, this too, shall pass.
