A Psalm for Today: Psalms 48:1,2

A Psalm for Today: Psalms 48: 1,2
Great is the Lord and greatly to be praised in the city of our God, in the mountain of His holiness. Beautiful in elevation, the joy of the whole earth, is Mount Zion on the sides of the north, the city of the great King.

I remember singing these two verses in high school. It was a catchy tune and a song of praise to our God, but beyond that I was pretty ignorant about Mount Zion. Now when I think of Mt. Zion, I think of David's tabernacle which was different from Moses' tabernacle. It was a new testament prototype in that it had no veil. You could go into the very presence of the ark of the covenant which represented the presence and glory of God. I believe David wrote Psalms 91 in the presence of the ark. "He that dwelleth in the secret place of the Most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty." When Jesus was crucified the veil of the temple was rent from top to bottom. Because of the finished work of Jesus Christ, we can come boldly to the throne of grace and receive mercy and find grace in our time of need.

I encourage you to look at Hebrews 12;18-24. We haven't come again to Mt. Sinai, but in verse 22, it says," But you have come to Mount Zion and to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, to an innumerable company of angels, to the general assembly, and church of the firstborn who are registered in heaven, to God the Judge of alll, to the spirits of just men made perfect, to Jesus the Mediator of the new covenant, and to the blood of sprinkling that speaks better things than that of Abel." Isaiah says," Come let us go up to the mountain of the Lord." Through the shed blood of Jesus sprinkled on the Mercy Seat not made with hands, our propitiation, we have access to the Great King. You don't have to take a number or make an appointment, or go through a secretary. By faith in the finished work of Christ, I can call on the Great King at any time in the beauty of holiness.
